Mark and I grew up in the same small town in Missouri.  Although we aren’t high school sweethearts, I am blessed to have married the quarterback I’ve had a crush on since the 8^th grade.  We recently celebrated 25 years of marriage.  Mark has been in the furniture industry since graduating from college, which has given us the opportunity to live in five states and seven cities.

Moving from Texas to Greensboro in 2015, I joined Ivey Lane the following year.  I’ve always loved pretty things and enjoy creating warm, inviting spaces.  Working with clients to turn their vision it into a reality is so much fun!  I truly enjoy being a part of the Ivey Lane family.  Working with a team of such talented people to create beautiful countertops, which turns our customer’s house into their home, is very rewarding.

When not working at Ivey Lane, I spend much time volunteering for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and Greensboro Day, where our daughter is a senior.  I love attending Bible Study, watching football, event planning, gardening and walking our two sweet dogs, Emma and Cutie.

While engineered surface countertops typically don’t require any form of sealing due to the fact that they’re made from a stone and resin composite, natural countertops do need to be sealed if you wish to preserve their beauty and extend their longevity.

What’s the Difference?

While natural stone countertops are cut directly from granite, marble, or types of stone, engineered surfaces are created from a combination of quartz crystals and a resin binder that helps to hold everything together. Engineered Surface Care

Caring for a quartz or porcelain engineered surface is fairly easy. For the most part, you simply want to focus on avoiding any kind of abrasive cleaner when it comes to cleaning and maintaining your counters. The following basic cleaning guidelines will help you maintain your engineered surfaces – 

• Use a soft cloth and mild dishwashing detergent to wipe up fresh spills.
• For dried or stuck-on stains, try using a glass cleaner with a non-abrasive sponge.
• If you’re dealing with something that’s caked on, like grease or paints from your little one’s arts and crafts, keep a putty knife handy to softly scrape away the mess.
• Remember, wipe your surface down daily.

Many homeowners confuse quartzite with quartz, which is an engineered countertop fabricated from loose quartz and synthetic materials. Quartzite, on the other hand, is a metamorphic rock that originated as sandstone. It is extracted from a quarry and formed into slabs.

The color of quartzite generally ranges from white to gray. Some quartzite slabs that were exposed to specific minerals during formation may have other color hues.

Quartzite Care

You can maintain the natural beauty of your quartzite countertops with these care tips.

• Like all natural stones, quartzite should be sealed to protect against stains.
• Do not use abrasives or cleaners with a vinegar or citrus base. Acidic cleaners can slowly break down sealants, making the stone dull and vulnerable to stains.
• Wipe down countertops daily with a damp cloth and a drop or two of mild detergent.
• If stains do occur, you can remove them with a commercial poultice or with baking soda and water mixed to the consistency of a paste. Spread a thick layer of the paste over the stain, cover with plastic wrap, wait a day or two, and then wipe clean. If there is still some staining, you can repeat the past application.
• Protect quartzite from high heat, such as a dish or pan that has just come out of the oven or off the stove.
• Use a cutting board for chopping to protect your quartzite countertop from scratches.

Granite 

This natural stone is heat and scratch resistant, and often considered one of the most durable choices for countertops. It does need to be sealed every fifteen years to help resist stains. Of the natural stone choices, granite has a wider range of color choices.

Marble

Marble is very heat resistant. It is softer than granite, which allows for the crafting of decorative edges; however, it is susceptible to scratches. Marble must also be sealed in order to repel stains. Acidic foods and cleaners can etch marble. In terms of appearance, each piece of marble is unique in its veining pattern. Many customers appreciate the timeless and elegant appeal of marble.  

Quartzite

Quartzite is also a natural stone and should not be confused with quartz, which is an engineered surface. Quartzite looks similar to marble in color and veining, and it is very hard and durable. Colors of quartzite typically range from white to gray; however, other color hues can be found in slabs that were exposed to specific minerals during formation.

For all of our clients, after you have picked your material, you will speak with a countertop specialist to choose your finishing details. While the stone itself will capture attention first, details such as edge finishes, inlays, and sealing bring the project together. Final measuring at your home or office

Before we cut your stone, our expert installation team will take final measurements of your home or office. You’ve taken a lot of time to select your materials, and in some cases the exact slab you want in your space. This step ensures that everything fits perfectly.

We take one additional step before cutting your stone to ensure that your countertops are exactly as you envisioned. You will meet with our shop manager, Rick Rickman, who will pull the slabs into the shop and show you exactly how each piece will be laid out. Q. What’s the difference between marble and granite; they are both stones aren’t they?

A. Here’s your answer in a nutshell. There are three main categories of stone we usually work with. Of course there are other subtypes, exotics, etc.  Limestone is a calcium carbonate based stone which usually has a honed finish. Marble is basically a limestone that has undergone a change.  Granite is a group of very hard, dense, igneous rocks chiefly made up of feldspar, quartz, mica, and hornblende. Granite is the most durable of the three.

Q. What material do I see on kitchen countertops?

A.  Chances are it is granite. Granite is as close to an indestructible countertop as there is.  It can withstand heat, wear, and liquids.  However, there are instances where some marbles may be used for certain applications or in conjunction with a proper sealer.

Q. What about maintenance, cleaning, or even scratch removal?

A. For marble and limestone, use mild soap and water. Nothing acidic! You can also use number 0000-grade steel wool, denatured alcohol, and acetone. There are also various products on the market made specifically for stone (available at grocery stores and major retail stores). We use products from Stone Care International, which we also sell at our showroom.

For granite, use mild soap and water, acetone, denatured alcohol, stone cleaners, and, if necessary, number 0000-grade steel wool. Granite is much more durable than marble or limestone, and you are less likely to harm it.

Both marble and granite require sealing. Depending on the color and frequency of use, an application of Permaseal (15-year warranty, stain-proof shield) can be applied by one of our qualified staff to ensure against staining, mold, mildew and excessive water absorption.

Q. How long does it take to get my material from you?

A. Lead times are affected by many variables, including stone availability, fabrication details, etc. Generally, we can handle most requests in one and a half to two weeks, sometimes sooner. We inventory many slabs and do our own fabrication, which trims the turnaround for most jobs we produce.

Q. How do I measure what I need?

A. Unless your project is very simple and you feel confident enough to provide the exact dimensions and shape and are willing to live with the results, you should let us assist with measuring. In many cases we make a precision template to accompany your order. We provide this service and urge you to take advantage of it.  If we are consulted from the very beginning, we can be sure you will get the correctly fabricated material, and we, of course, then bear that responsibility.  There are often many factors overlooked when measuring for a remodeling job or even new construction. We can make sure there are no surprises by discussing possible seam locations at the time of measurement.

Q. I know stone is heavy, so what about extra support, and will it hold up?

A. We deal typically in two material thicknesses: 2 centimeters (3/4″) or 3 centimeters (1-1/4″) thickness. The 2 cm material weighs about 12 lbs per square foot, and 3 cm materials weigh 18 to 20 lbs per square foot. Yes, these materials can be heavier, but once in place in the right application, they are very long lasting and durable. Sometimes long pieces or pieces with multiple cutouts require some planning for proper support, but generally, in countertop applications, there will not be a need for extra support.

Q. What accounts for the differences in color of stone products?

A.  Simply put, the coloring depends on where in the world it came from.  Stone is quarried in many places in the United States and other countries, including Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, France, Italy, and others. Stone is a product of nature, not man-made, so there are differences in veining and coloring among neighboring deposits.

Q. How much is my project going to cost me?

A.  No two projects are the same. At Ivey Lane, we will examine your project’s requirements and give you a quote. We work from drawings and information provided to arrive at a fair firm price as opposed to an estimate.  Many factors come into play, such as material availability, slab size, material utilization, thickness, fabrication details, finish, edging, etc. The more information you can supply us up front, the more likely we are able to give you bottom-line fabricated and installed pricing.

Q. What kind of finish is available?

A. Basically, textured, honed, or polished, with polished being the most common. We can advise you if your application would be better suited for one finish over another. Amount of traffic, exposure to the elements, appearance, and other factors determine the proper finish. Polishing produces a glossy finish which brings out the full color and character of the stone. Polishing is generally not recommended for exterior use or commercial floors. A honed finish is satin smooth with little or no gloss and is often used for commercial floors.
